THE DUCAL PARK OF PARMA
SATURDAY IN OLTRETORRENTE
PARMA SUMMER 2020
The first meeting of Saturday in Oltretorrente Parma Summer 2020 is dedicated to the Ducal Park of Parma, about twenty hectares of land full of art, history, nature and life.
The guided tour traces the transformations of the Ducal Park of Parma, from the first Farnese plan to the Bourbon redesigning. It was the arrival in Parma of a capable and brilliant official, Guillaume Du Tillot, which sanctioned the resurrection of the Farnese garden in the mid-18th century. The rich eighteenth-century graphic corpus is testimony to an articulated design debate that finally saw the prevalence of a classicist vision of art thanks to the young Lyon architect Ennemond-Alexandre Petitot.
The subsequent transformations of the Ducal Park will be retraced, from the Napoleonic era to the restorations of 2000-2002, which brought it back to its eighteenth-century appearance, with particular attention to the statues made by Boudard, to the series of vases designed by Petitot, to the tree species, without forgetting the different ecosystems present.
The trees selected by species still recall precise choices with practical and symbolic purposes. Site of pleasure and reflection of power, the Ducal Park of Parma has hosted shows for centuries capable of leaving an indelible mark on Parma’s collective imagination and art.
