SAINT HILARY: HISTORY, ART AND TRADITION

GUIDED TOUR TO THE ANCIENT ORATORY OF SAINT HILARY IN PARMA

The adoption of the patronage of Saint Hilary for the city of Parma is not one of those particular events, connected to historical happenings well documented. At times it is difficult to distinguish history from legend, being unable to count on first hand written sources.

Saint Hilary was adopted as a patron by the city of Parma during the thirteenth century. He is the saint to whom a church was dedicated on the via Emilia at the western gates of the city. He was not only the patron Saint of the city but also recognized as the protector of the civil activities and the guilds of crafts present in Parma.

A religious and civil patron, provident rescuer of spiritual and physical illnesses, to whom the community had always been devoted as the restoration works carried out by the government of Ranuccio II, at the time of reform of the sanitary structures of the city, still demonstrate.

An anti-clerical scholar, St. Hilary is a saint always close to the ill and the young, close to the devout and helpless childhood.

Come and discover the history of the Oratory of Saint Hilary, let yourself be fascinated by the legend and anecdotes of the saint’s life, from the “Pietra di Sant’Ilario” to the “Sweet Shoes”. We’ll wait for you!
